ORIGINS IN GERMAN TYROL

The surname Boehles was also spelled Böhles, Boehler, Buehler, Buhler, Biehler, and Biller. The family was Roman Catholic.

The family originated in Tyrol and then emigrated to northern France before 1660. After the Thirty Years War, great parts of the Alsace and the Palatinate were destroyed. The elector in the Palatinate resettled people from Tyrol and Switzerland into the region, promising them 10 years without any taxes and religious liberty. Religious liberty has always been a hallmark of the Palatinate.

King Louis XIV's brother, Philippe of Orleans, married Elisabeth Charlotte of the Rhine (daughter of Karl Ludwig, Elector Palatine), and Louis claimed that she was entitled to land or compensation. In German minds, this raised the threat of further French expansion into the Rhineland. And they were right: Louis decided that the Palatinate must become French. His generals destroyed the Alsace and the Palatinate again, after the Thirty Years War. When the war was over, Louis called builders and architects into the region to build up the destroyed towns and villages. The result is that there are still many French names in the German Palatinate even to this day.

They may have come from the city called Saalfelden, Tyrol, but that is unconfirmed. It is in the Austrian state of Salzburg and is the administrative center of the Pinzgauer Saalachtal. This is the second of my families from northern France who came from Tyrol, the other being the Schiessling family.

EMIGRATION TO NORTHERN FRANCE

George Boehles was married to Marguerithe and together they settled in Lauterbourg, Alsace at the French-German border. Their grandson Jean Baptiste Boehles was a basket maker and their great-grandson Joannes (Jean Etienne) Boehles was a tailor.

Lauterbourg is the closest town on the Alsace border with Germany and on the Rhine River. The town population in 1792 was 1,964 and the present population is 2,372.

Joannes Boehles settled in Scheibenhard, the town of his wife Marie Eve Gabriel. The Boehles family listed among the founding families of the tiny French-German border village, according to records from the St. George Church in Scheibenhard. The small village of Scheibenhard had a 1792 population of 651 persons; the current population is around 500. Scheibenhard is located in the Lauterbourg district, Wissembourg borough. Photos of Scheibenhard are available here. A history of the village is available here. The village is a French commune located in the Alsace region's department of Bas-Rhin on the German border, continuous with the German village of Scheibenhardt, separated only by a small creek, the Lauter. Cousin Pierre Bertrand has a history of the village online in French.

Around 1793, the Austrian army invaded the north of Alsace. Several families of the village fled, never returning. The Lauter creek became a border in 1815 due to the Vienna Congress, but from 1870 to 1918 both sides were reunited in the German Empire. On the south side of the Lauter, French is the official language and payment is made with French Francs, on the other side it's the German language and German marks. The village is situated in the easternmost corner of the French Hexagone, an epithet of France, owing to the shape of its European mainland. A regular hexagon is depicted on France's one- and two-Euro coins.

Riedseltz, where Maria Eva Boehles and her husband Francois Louis Braa resided, had a 1792 population of 1,013 and has a present day population of around 1,200.

SURNAME ORIGINS

"Buehl" is south German in origin and is a topographic name for someone who lived on a hillside, from Middle High German buhel or "hill" or a habitational name from a place called Behl. "Biller" is a southern form of "Buehler" and comes from the Middle High German bil(le) or "sculpture", likely an occupational name for a stonemason or sculptor. "Biller" is also a variant of Buller, a nickname from Middle High German bullen or "to bark" or "to bawl".
