Notes on Joseph and Mary Frank:
.............Mary was baptised Franziska on August 6, 1857 in Saint Lawrence. Her baptismal sponsor was her aunt, Fraziska (Kaiser) Rabenstein. Mary Doll Frank Schild was buried June 26, 1928 in Hartford/Saint Lawrence.
.............Her obituary, dated June 29, 1928, stated: Mrs. Mary Schild passed away at her home on High Street, Saturday evening, June 23 at 7:45 o' clock. Death was due to a complication of diseases which she had been a sufferer for the past seven years and has been confined to her bed for three weeks. Mrs. Schild, nee Mary Doll, was born in the town of Addison, July 21, 1857; and thus at her death had attained the age of 70 years, 11 months, and 2 days.
.............On July 7, 1875 she was united in marriage, at Saint Lawrence Church, to Joseph Frank, a resident of the same locality. Following their marriage they lived in Arkansas for 6 years, and in Kansas for 10 years. Then, they finally returned to the Frank homestead in the town of Addison, and made home their until the death of her husband in 1913. Mrs. Frank then came to this city (Hartford), where she was united in marriage in 1918 to Mr. John Schild, who died three years ago.
.............By her first marriage, she was the mother of 12 children, three of whom, Joseph, age 29, who died in 1918, and two sons, who passed away in infanct predeceased her. She is survived by the following sons and daughters: Mary (Mrs. Louis Neu), Margaret (Mrs. Peter Kolb), and Matt; of Milwaukee. Anna (Mrs. Joseph Schmidt) town of Rubicon; Elizabeth (Mrs. Robt. Reitzner) Mapleton; Helen (Mrs. Oscar G. Peters) Wyocena; Herman, who's whereabouts at the present time are unknown; and Henry of Japan. She leaves 3 sisters, Mrs. Anna Steinmetz and Mrs. Margaret Blumer of Marshfield; and Mrs. Elizabeth Nigh of Pueblo, Colorado.
.............Deceased was the mother of an unusually large family who she carefully guarded over while her health permited. Because she cares and responsibilities of rearing so large a family, took heavily of her time and attention. Mrs. Schild of necessity, was a quite, home-loving woman. She was of congenial disposition and radiated good cheer to those that she came in contact with. Her passing removes her from a bed of pain. She was a loyal Christian, observing the religious teachings of the Roman Catholic Church as a member of St. Killian's Congregation. Last services of the remains of Mrs. Schild were conducted Tuesday morning from St. Killian's Church with Rev. C.J. Hartmann officiating. Interment was made in the parish cemetery on Union Street. Joseph Frank is buried at St. Lawrence Catholic Cemetery, row 18 (old north).

Notes on Michael and Anna Steinmetz:
............."History of Wood County, Wisconsin" (1923) by George O. Jones, pgs. 503-504, detail the life of Michael Steinmetz. It begins, "During his lifetime, through his enterprise and unwavering adherence to all his agreements, (Michael Steinmetz) built a successful career in the hotel and marcantile business in Marshfield. After attending school he remained on his father's farm until his marriage to Miss Anna Doll, then of Chicago, on Nov. 28, 1879. Her parents settled in Washington County, Wis. in the early days of this county, coming from Germany, and she was born on their farm in the county. She and Mr. Steinmetz grew up as neighbors.
.............Immediately following their marriage, they came to Marshfield, where Mr. Steinmetz engaged in the hotel business on S. Central Ave. In 1884, he lfet this and bought a small store on the corner of N. Central Ave. and E. A street; he was still conducting business when Marshfield was stricken by the great fire of 1887, and his was the only store left standing on the north side. He joined in the work of reconstructing the city by building a two-story brick double business block on A Street, opposite the store he was then conducting. He established a general mercantile business in his new property and operated it as such until illness compelled him to retire, when he sold the business to Kestel Bros. in 1920.
.............On Feb. 27, 1910, after suffering poor health for several years, Mr. Steinmetz passed away, leaving his wife and ten children. During his life, he was prominent in the Order of Catholic Foresters, being one of its charter members; he was a member of St. Johns Catholic Parish. He served as alderman of his ward for ten years; politically, he was liberal (classical liberal, free market). He was a director and stockholder in the American National Bank of Marshfield.
.............His family, of which the sons are all talented in music and graduates of Marshfield High School, is as follows: Theodore, bandmaster at Eau Claire, Wis.; Rose, now Mrs. Martin Berg of N. Central Ave., Marshfield; Ella, now Mrs. Edwin Rapp of Marshfield; Elenora, now Mrs. Walter Patterson of Wahkon, Minn.; Ferriola, now Mrs. Walter Gleason of Milwaukee; Eugene, a musician in a Milwaukee band; Frederick, living at home; Emil, also in a Milwaukee band; Esther, now Mrs. Adolph J. Schmidler, of Milwaukee; and Harold, attending Marshfield High School. Mrs. Steinmetz is now living in the commodious home built by Mr. Steinmetz adjoining his business block. The four eldest sons enlisted at the beginning of the World War; they were members of the famous 32d Divison Band and were slightly gassed during a battle.
.............The Steinmetz family lived very close to the Dolls in Addison. Henry and Mary Steinmetz were the parents. According to the 1920 Census, the family was living in Milwaukee's 2nd ward. Nora Patterson (Lenora Steinmetz) executed the will of Anna Steinmetz in December of 1934 according to the Wisconsin Rapids Daily Tribune, Dec. 19, 1934. Anna is buried at Lot S of Block D in the city of Marshfield, Wisconsin.

FAMILY ORIGINS

The Toll / Doll family originated in Prussia (Preuben), residing in the towns of Rommelsheim, Binsfield, and Dorweiler in far Western Germany. Before the Napoleonic Wars this entire area belonged to the duchy of Julich. The main river in the district is the Rur.

The family was Roman Catholic. The original family surname was Toll, Tollman, or Tollmann.

Anna Maria Esch and Wilhelm Doll were married on May 2, 1805 in Binsfeld. Their parents are listed as Irmgardis Lenzen and Pierre Toll and Elisabeth Esch. No father is listed for Anna Maria Esch.

The peak of the French Empire was in 1812, so it makes sense that Petri Toll or Peter Toll was listed as "Pierre Toll". The name Irmgardis is similar to the American "Irma" or "Irmgard" and was taken after a saint.

NÖRVENICH, BINSFELD, and ROMMELSHEIM

Dorweiler is a hamlet within Nörvenich which is embedded between the Erft and the Neffelbach, tributaries of the Rhine River. It's population is around 200. As with most villages in the area, agriculture has always been the main occupation of residents. Since ancient times there were small and medium-sized farms that were farmed in traditional ways.

Binsfeld is a part of the municipality Nörvenich in the district of Düren in North Rhine-Westphalia. The population in 1885 was just 629 and the current population is 950. It is the western-most district of the municipality and adjacent to the city of Düren.

Until 1969, Rommelsheim and Binsfeld were originally part of the same municipality. A small river called the Ellebach flows through the village of Rommelsheim. The population is around 550.

IMMIGRATION

According to an immigrant approval document found by cousin Carol Steinmetz, 72 year old Wilhelm Doll of Rommelsheim house #142 traveled on the ship Nordamerica on Feb. 13, 1852. Also on the ship was his son-in-law Johann Josef Schneider, age 53, and Josef's wife Anna Maria Doll. They were accompanied by children Elisabeth, age 18, Anna Maria, age 15, Werner age 14, Irmgard age 10, Gertrud age 7, Apollonia age 6 and Catharina age 2.

Heinrich Doll and his wife Gertrud Kayser Doll are listed as having traveled on March 10, 1851 on the ship Amerika with child Irmgard, 9 months. Heinrich Doll's birth date is listed as September 7, 1823.

Curiously, Anna Maria Esch Doll, the wife of Wilhelm, also came to America, but is not listed on any ship register or in any record once the family arrived in the United States.

SETTLEMENT IN AMERICA

The family is believed to have immediately settled in Washington County, Wisconsin. The 1860 Census for Polk, Wisconsin includes a listing of the Doll family as follows: Henry, 34, farmer from Prussia; Gertrude, 34; Friedrich, 7; Margrethe, 4; Anna M., 3; Anna, 6 mo. The value of the family property is listed at $1200. The family had assets totaling $355. Polk has a current population of around 4,000 and the unincorporated communities of Ackerville and Mayfield are located in the town.

Between 1860 and 1870, the family moved to Addison and made quite a bit of income. The 1870 Census for Addison, Wisconsin lists: Henry, 48; Gerthruth, 48; Friedrich, 16; Margreth, 14; Mary, 13; Anna, 10; Elisabeth, 8. All of the children were attending school. The value of the home was an impressive $4500 and the value of the personal assets of the family was $1400. These numbers, when compared with other new settlers, are relatively high. The 1880 Census lists similar information: Henry, 56; Gertrude, 56; Fritz, 26; Elisabeth, 19. Henry Doll is listed as a farmer and his son Fritz is listed as helping him work the farm.

Addison is a tiny community in Washington County with a current population of around 3,000. It is still a farming community to this day. To the immediate east is Allenton. Further south are the larger communities of Hartford and Slinger. The Frank family also settled in Addison.

SCHNEIDER FAMILY

My ancestor Heinrich Doll's oldest sister was Margaret, who married Joseph Schneider. The Schneider family became quite large and eventually expanded to many states including Alabama, Florida, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, South Dakota, Oklahoma, Washington, and Wisconsin. In the 1860 census, the family is listed in Addison with the following family members: Joseph Schneider, 61, farmer; Margaret, 55; John, 21; Anna, 13; Catherine, 10. The 1870 census lists: Joseph Schneider, 71, farmer; Margretha, 64; and Catharina, 20. Two farms down on one side we find listed: John W. Schneider, 31, farmer; Rosalia, 25; John, 5; Henry, 3; and Julius, 1.

In 1873 or 1874, Joseph and Margaret (Doll) Schneider's son John (Jan) moved his young family from Washington County, Wisconsin to Yankton, South Dakota. John and Rosalia's first five children were born in Wisconsin and the next six children were born in South Dakota. Eight of the ten children survived to adulthood, and three of the Schneider youth grew up to have big families of their own. John Schneider, the grandson of Joseph and Margaret (Doll), and his wife Marie, adopted a son -- their only child -- Arlo Sanderson.

Two farms down on the other side we find members of the Doll family: John Doll, 51, farmer; Anna, 48; Peter, 18; Elizabeth, 16; Anna, 13; Henry, 10; Anna, 7; and William, 4 months. John Doll was the brother of my ancestor Henry and the brother of Margaret Doll Schneider.

CHURCH LIFE AND TRAVEL

The Doll family attended Saint Lawrence Catholic Church in Saint Lawrence, Wisconsin. The Saint Lawrence Catholic Church is located at the southeast corner of Hwy. 175 and Hwy. K in Saint Lawrence, Wisconsin. Saint Lawrence (different than St. Lawrence) is near Hartford in Washington County. The church was founded in 1846 by the Rev. Charles Schraudenbach, who was also the first resident pastor. The courthouse for Saint Lawrence was located in Port Washington. The current population is around 740 people.

The Doll family made regular trips between Wood and Washington counties for a long period of time. In 1883, the family moved to Marshfield, Wood County, Wisconsin. The 1900 Census lists Henry Doll (80 years old) living with his granddaughter Agness Blumer (18 years old) in Marshfield, Wisconsin.

Anna Maria (Esch) Doll is buried with her son Johan Peter Doll and her husband Wilhelm Doll at Saint Lawrence Cemetery in St. Lawrence, Wisconsin. The gravestone is near the church. The cemetery plots for Heinrich and Gertrud (Kaiser) Doll appear with the following etched words and are located in Wood County, Wisconsin at Gates of Heaven Cemetery:

NOTABLE RELATIVE: THEODORE STEINMETZ

Cousin Theodore A. "Steinie" Steinmetz (1880-1951) was a composer and the longest serving musician in the Wisconsin National Guard of his era. During training for WWI combat, Mr. Steinmetz, a member of the 32nd division Wisconsin infantry, wrote a march for the division that celebrates the combined brigades from Wisconsin and Michigan and their achievements in France for the Allied forces. Listen to the march online. The 32nd Infantry Division gained a reputation for their effectiveness and tenacity in WWI and WWII. In WWI, they were the first division to pierce the German Hindenberg's line of defense.

Known as the composer of the "32nd Division March", Mr. Steinmetz was also conductor of the Eau Claire Municipal Band and the 105th Cavalry Band. An article in the Portage Daily Register by Michael Thompson and dated June 30, 2010 profiles Mr. Steinmetz's legacy in central Wisconsin: "(Theodore) Steinmetz wrote the piece during the worst times. Before World War I, he had served as a military band leader for several years. In 1917, the troops in his unit -- by that time the 32nd Infantry Division, the 'Red Arrow Division' -- were training in Texas, about to be shipped off to war in France. The lyrics he wrote to accompany the march capture the times: 'The Kaiser has no Chance/We'll put him in a Trance/Rah!'"

"A divisional history, The 32nd Division in the World War, 1917-1919 by the Wisconsin War History Commission and Michigan War History Commission, mentions the music's importance immediately after the armistice of Nov. 11, 1918. The 32nd was sent to the Rhine, in Germany. Six days after the armistice, it says, 'The Division took to the roads, marching in two columns. There were no ceremonies, though the bands played the 32nd Divison March and other triumphant pieces as the various regiments got under way. Except for the bands, the march was conducted at all times as in the presence of the enemy'." Read more.

NOTABLE RELATIVE: JOHN L. STEINMETZ

"The Four Teens" of Eau Claire, Wisconsin was the youngest Barbershop quartet to ever win an international singing competition. They did so in 1952, when their members were 19 and 20.

My 2nd cousin, twice removed, Airman 2nd Class John L. Steinmetz, formed the band at his parent's house in 1949. John was the tenor singer in the quartet.

The barbershop quartet toured military posts throughout the world with an all-Air Force show called Tops in Blue.

SURNAME MEANINGS

The surname Toll was a nickname from Middle High German and came from tol or dol and has meanings ranging from 'foolish' or 'mad' to 'strong' and 'handsome'. It could also be from a reduced form of the personal name Bartholomaus. In an early baptism document, the family surname is listed as Tollmann.

The surname Lenzen (Lenz or Lentz) has several possible meanings: 1) A habitational name from a place with the name Lenzen, which doesn't seem to be likely in this instance; 2) From a personal name, in which two originally distinct names have fallen together: a pet form of the personal name Lorenz, and the Germanic personal name Lanzo, which was originally a short form of any of several compound names with "land" as the first element, e.g. Lambrecht (see Lambert); 3) A nickname from Middle High German lenz or "spring" or from lang or "long", since in this season the days grow longer; 4) The name may also have been bestowed on someone who was born in the spring or who owed rent or service at that time of year, or it may have denoted someone who was of a sunny and spring-like disposition.

The surname Esch has two different meanings, either a habitational name (from Old High German asc or 'ash' or a topographic name for someone who lived near a prominent ash tree) or from the Middle High German ezzisch, meaning 'seeded field' (and thus a topographic name for someone who lived by an area where grain was grown or perhaps a status name for someone who owned such land).

The surname Kaiser is a common German surname, originating partly as an occupational name for a servant in an Emperor's household, partly as a nickname for someone who behaved in an imperious manner, and partly from a house sign.

Finally, the surname Frank was an ethnic or regional name for someone from Franconia (German Franken), a region of southwestern Germany so called from its early settlement by the Franks, a Germanic people who inhabited the lands around the river Rhine in Roman times.
