The surname Golomb is eastern Ashkenazic and is an ornamental name from the Polish golab or "dove" or "pigeon". It may have also been assigned to a mild-mannered or peace-loving man. The surname was also spelled Golomp, Golob, Galob, Golop, and Galop. In the case of my family, it may have been assigned or adopted as a habitational name because there was a tiny village 5 miles south of the ancestral location of Krylow called Golebie, Poland. The current Golebie population is 70 persons.

The surname Gran is a nickname for an argumentative person, from the Middle High German grin or "loud cry".

The surname Kiper is a metonymic occupational name for a coppersmith, from central and southeastern Yiddish kiper or "copper". It may have been adopted as an ornamental name.
