Notes on Sebastian and Elisabeth Hirschboeck:
.............Sebastian Hirschboeck is the immigrant ancestor, along with his wife Elisabeth Maier. His occupation for many years was a shoemaker; he established his own business in Washington County upon arrival in the U.S. in 1853. He is perhaps most noted for the clock that he built in 1857 at the age of 50 years old, which stands today at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in West Bend (formerly Barton), Wisconsin. According to Herbert Hirschboeck, when the tower clock of St. John's Cathedral in Milwaukee arrived from Europe broken, it could not be put in operation until Sebastian rebuilt the damaged parts.
.............According to A History of the Village of Barton by Dr. Richard H. Driessel, "Sebastian Hirschboeck was one of the earliest German craftsmen to come to the village. He and his sons were notable in commercial development and in Church affairs for several generations. He came to Milwaukee from Bavaria in 1853 and to Barton in 1855. He continued to be active in trade while holding several church offices and was a frequent delegate to Democratic political conventions."
.............Sebastian Hirschboeck's original shoe/boot shop was located at 316 Commerce Street, Barton, Wisconsin. Later the building became the post office in Barton. The building still stands today. The Hirschboeck residence was at 320 Commerce Street. It was built in 1892. Sebastian was buried Oct. 1, 1868 at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Barton, Wisconsin.

.............Little is known about George or Ottilia. George left Washington County and settled in Milwaukee, perhaps with his younger brother John. George was a shoemaker, like his father. The 1870 Milwaukee City Directory lists Geo. Hirschboeck as residing at 545 7th Street in Milwaukee with his occupation as a shoemaker. The Wisconsin State Census, 1875, lists George living with 3 other males and 4 females in his household.
.............The 1880 Census lists him as a watchmaker. That 1880 listing for the family includes: George, 48, listed as ill; Ottilie, 46, keeping house; Barbara, 21, works in tailor shop; Damian, 18, works in foundry; Mary, 17, works in tailor shop; Elisabeth, 9, in school; George, 8, in school; and John, 6.
.............The 1910 Census for Milwaukee, ward 3, lists Ottilia Hirschboeck, age 75, and her daughter, Barbara, 50. Ottilia's primary language is listed as German. The last address of the family was 545 7th Street, Milwaukee. He is buried at Calvary Cemetery, block 5, row 218 with his wife and his children John, Dominic, Barbara, and Elizabeth. Ottilia died of heart disease.

.............Ray Schuster was drafted into the Army to serve in WWI on June 5, 1917. At the time he was living at 1956 W. 35th St, Chicago and was working as a sheet metal worker, employed by his father. At the time of enlistment he was single, had a medium build/slender, dark blue eyes, and light brown hair. He served until Jan. 1, 1919.
.............He also served in WWII. At the time of his draft for WII, he was living at 4059 Howard Ave. in Western Springs, Illinois and was married to Ruth. His place of employment was at 3704 S. Western Ave., Chicago.
.............According to his obituary in the Chicago Tribune, he was a "pioneer Chicago auto dealer". Ray Schuster sold Model T Fords at Archer and Ashland Avenues and later operated a Dodge dealership for many years. He attended St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 124 N. Spring Ave., La Grange, IL. He had 21 grandchildren at the time of his death in 1989.

Notes on Robert Reinders:
.............Reinders graduated cum laude from the University of Notre Dame, BA 1947 and MA 1949. From 1949-1956, he taught at St. Edward's University in Austin, Texas, and earned his Ph.D. from the University of Texas, Austin, in 1957. He and his wife moved to New Orleans, where Robert taught at Xavier University (1956-57) and Tulane University (1957-1965). He was active in the civil rights and peace movements serving as faculty advisor for the Tulane Liberal Club and on the boards of the New Orleans Council for Peaceful Alternatives, the Free Southern Theatre and the Louisiana Civil Liberties Union. He was the New Orleans correspondent for the Texas Observer and the Buffalo (NY) Empire Star.
.............In 1965, Reinders was awarded a Senior Fulbright Scholarship and taught adult education courses at the University of Sheffield in England. The following year, he began the first of 24 years in the Department of History and American Studies at the University of Nottingham. He also taught on a teacher's exchange at Sacramento State University and University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, as well as summer schools at SUNY-Buffalo and Carroll College. He chaired the Nottingham and District Community Relations Council and helped organize the second chapter of the Caribbean Artists Movement. For more than a decade, Reinders and his good friend Fred Bazler performed multimedia shows dealing with aspects of American history throughout England and, under the sponsorship of the United States Information Service, in West Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Iceland and Ireland. Reinders published a book, End of an Era: New Orleans, 1850-1860, and contributed articles to scholarly journals, including several on former Milwaukee Mayor Daniel W. Hoan. For several years, Reinders served on the board of the British Association for American Studies and edited the BAAS newsletter.
.............Upon retirement in 1990, Reinders took up residence in Milwaukee. With his cousin, Beatrice Reinders, he took an active interest in the Bay View Historical Society, serving on the board and as chairman of the Program Committee. He also was active in the Wisconsin Labor History Society.

.............George Hirschbeck was baptised August 11, 1872 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His occupation was a machinist and an engineer; he is said to have made wrought iron gates and persisted in other iron work at a large mansion next to the Public Library in downtown Milwaukee. (The 1910 Census lists his occupation was "iron works." The 1930 Census lists his occupation as a solderer.) He last resided at 2035 North 30th Street, Milwaukee with the Schmidts. He was buried Sept. 12, 1940 at Holy Cross Cemetery, block 18, section A, lot 42-s, grave 4.

.............The Milwaukee Sentinel, April 1, 1961 profiles him in an article called "Fr. Hirschboeck Serves Skilled Workers in Japan." The article states, "Rev. George Hirschboeck bettered the working conditions of Japanese silk artisans in Kyoto. The Maryknoll Father, graduate of St. Anne's School and St. John Cathedral High School, brought Christianity to the workers by showing them it's a beautiful way to live.
.............Father Hirschboeck moved into the heart of the weaving community by first learning about the problems of the famed Nishijin silk weavers of Kyoto. He watched the silk weavers at work. The finest in the world, they even file their fingernails so they can produce the most intricate patterns. He saw their skill paid them little for many hours of work. So father Hirschboeck organized a cooperative.
.............Then he turned to the building of a church. With the help of a young Swiss priest-architect, the Rev. Karl Fruehler, Father Hirschboeck erected the Church of the Holy Spirit -- a building of contemporary architechture incorporating many of the beautiful designs and feathers of both East and West. Overnight his church became a tourist attraction noted because of its beauty and originality."

Notes on Daniel and Barbara Hirschboeck:
.............While listed as "Damian" in most public records, Mr. Hirschboeck was called "Daniel" by close friends. He resided in Barton, Wisconsin for most of his life. In 1870, the value of his real estate was $1,000 and the value of his personal assets was $500, according to the collected census data. His occupation was a boot and shoe maker.
.............Mr. Hirschboeck was a notable, respected member of the community. The Catholic faith and the Church were integral to each of the Hirschboeck pioneers. Damian Hirschboeck was one of the three original trustees of the St. Mary's Church, which was established in September, 1857. Active in the community, Damian Hirschboeck was a member of the Barton School Board. The Board came into existence in 1854, and, sometime from 1856 to 1867, Hirschboeck served as an elected member.
.............Fraternal, benevolent, and social societies associated with the Catholic Church were important in the community, too. The St. Joseph Society for men was one of the most active, starting in the early years. In December, 1885, the society elected Damian Hirschboeck to the position of Treasurer. Hirschboeck was also an accomplished fisherman. In one season, it's reported that he caught 100 pickerel (1875). In 1879, he served on the County Fair Committee.
.............According to 1881 History of Washington and Ozaukee Counties, "Damian Hirschboeck, manufacturer of and dealer in boots and shoes, Barton; business established April, 1855. The subject of this sketch is a native of Bavaria, Germany, and is the son of Sebastian and Elizabeth (Myer) Hirschboeck; was born Sept 27, 1831; learned his trade in his native country, and came to America in 1853, making his home in Milwaukee; he worked at his trade with Bradley & Metcalf 'til April 1, 1855; he then moved to the village of Barton and started in his present business. Mr. Hirschboeck was married at Milwaukee July 4, 1853, to Miss Barbara Braun, daughter of Bartholomew and Francisca (Ohlinger) Braun; Mrs. H. was born in Bavaria, Germany; they have had thirteen children, of whom eleven are living; the two first were twins and died in infancy; those living are Joseph, who is agent of the American Express Co. at Barton; was appointed Sept. 12, 1877; Barbara, George, Sebastian, John, Elizabeth, Peter and Paul (twins), Frank A., Stephen, and Zaezelia F. Mr. Hirschboeck has served his school district in the capacity of Treasurer six years."

Damian Hirschboeck is buried with his wife Barbara, his son and daughter-in-law George and Catherine, his daughter and son-in-law Barbara and Gerhard J. Woltering/Woltring, and his grandson and grandaughter John G. and Helen Hirschboeck. They are buried at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Barton, Wisconsin at row 6-7.

Notes on Joseph and Ellen Hirschboeck:
.............Ellen was also called Eleanora. Her surname is listed as Dowling or Dolan. Joseph Hirschboeck, son of Damian, clearly exhibited the leadership characteristics of his father. He was also a boot and shoe maker and merchant. In 1876 he considered buying the local tannery and starting a leather store, but entered other enterprises. In 1885, Joseph Hirschboeck bought the general store where Otten's store is presently located, from Peter Fraser. The store sold dry goods, groceries, boots, shoes, flour, feed, and lumber. Hirschboeck sold that store shortly after his purchase of it, though. Joseph was also the railroad station agent in Barton the early 1880s (among the first in the town's short history), but was replaced by J.R. Nigh in 1885 when Hirschboeck bought Peter Fraser's general store. Additionally, Joseph Hirschboeck served as Town Constable. It is unclear whether or not Joseph moved to New York, or whether Helen moved to New York with her children after Joseph's death. The baseball umpires in the Hirschboeck family stem from this branch (John F. --> John J. --> John/Mark).

Notes on George and Katherine Hirschboeck:
.............George Hirschboeck, son of Damian, was prominent in the Barton community. His occupation was a shoemaker. He had his home and shop on present-day Commerce Street. He not only served as Deputy Sheriff (1879), handling approximately three cases a week, but he also was a foreman for the Barton Volunteer Fire Department. The Department was established in 1900 and George was involved from 1905-1911. He was postmaster of the Barton Post Office in 1885 and 1893. In July, 1919, when the Barton State Bank was formed, G. Hirschboeck was on the Board of Directors of the first bank in Barton. This information comes from A History of the Village of Barton by Dr. Richard H. Driessel.
.............George died of tetanus (lockjaw) after injuring himself with an awl (or punch) used when working with leather, according to his great-grandson Rob Hirschboeck.

.............Frank Hirschboeck and family lived in the Town of Lake in the 1907 Milwaukee County Directory. He was listed as a machinist. Another residence of the family was at Old Chicago Rd., 3 blocks north of Howard Avenue, route 2, station D, Milwaukee. According to cemetery records, Frank died at this location. He was buried at Mount Olivet Cemetery, block 3, section 3, lot 6 on Jan. 15, 1925. After he died, Frances and her son Raymond moved in with Joseph Szopinski's in West Milwaukee, possibly serving as a housekeeper. They are listed, at ages 55 and 27, in the 1930 census.

Notes on John and Catherine Hirschboeck:
.............John Hirschboeck was a member of the Choir at St. Mary's Church in Barton. The Choir was established just two years after the Church's founding in 1857. His birth name was Johan in Germany, and he was apparently nicknamed Nepomuc. The 1870 Milwaukee City Directory lists John Hirschboeck as residing at 624 Galena Street with his occupation being a shoemaker. In the 1880 U.S. Census, John shows up with his family in Kewaskum, Washington County, Wisconsin. The 1900 Census (Milwaukee, ward 18) lists the family as follows: John, born April 1840; Catharine, Oct. 1844; Josephine, Oct. 1873; Johanna, Dec. 1874, occupation: saleswoman; Catharine, Oct. 1878; Frank, Aug. 1887, at school.
.............The Hirschboeck family built a house on Park Place in Milwaukee, between Oakland Avenue and Cramer Street. This was next door to Catherine Hoff's brother, John T. Hoff, and her sister Phillipine Resch and brother Stephen Hoff lived nearby. (According to Herbert Hirschboeck, they also lived on North Water Street at Juneau Avenue.) John was a shoemaker in Milwaukee during a period when the custom making of shoes was losing ground to factory made shoes. After trying the production line employment at the Bradley and Metcalf Shoe factory, John decided he didn't like it and took his family with him to Kewaskum in Washington County. There he continued custom boot and shoe making independently.
.............It was in Washington County that he became involved in politics, as a county delegate for the Democrat Party. In 1891, General Billy Mitchell's father John L. Mitchell was running as a Democrat for U.S. Senator against Congressman Edward S. Bragg. As a result of Bragg's false promise (in 1885) to appoint John Hirschboeck to the post of Kewaskum Postmaster, John helped Mitchell win the eastern counties of Wisconsin, which were heavily populated by German immigrants. Mitchell won, and served as Senator for one term.
.............According to a story from Herbert Hirschboeck, 'ole Patrick O'Meara of West Bend loved to tell on John, whose popularity had made him chairman of village and county caucuses many times. O'Meara said that in one Kewaskum caucus there were two slates of delegates, one favored by John and one opposed, to be elected to go to the county caucus. There was a tie vote and, in the excitement, John, who could break the tie, forgot to vote. What O'Meara did not mention was that both slates came en masse to the county caucus and John was able to persuade the county caucus to recognize his slate. Instead of being considered a clown for not breaking that tie, he succeeded as an able politician.
.............Eventually, he gained appointment in the U.S. Treasury Department under Grover Cleveland. In that capacity, he served as a gauger -- a revenue agent in the pre-Prohibition era. The Internal Revenue Service position (in the Treasury Department) involved voluminous record preparation and late afternoons and evenings found John with daughters, Josephine and Katherine writing with glass stylus pens to make carbon copies and checking and rechecking reports.

Notes on Stephen and Katherine Hirschboeck:
.............Stephen was early employed in the Rosenheimer general store in Kewaskum and in selling farm machinery in the surrounding countryside. He returned to Milwaukee as a young man to enter Meyer's Business College to learn bookkeeping. He made this his vocation and served several employers, finally (1915) the Luick Ice Cream Company of which he was secretary at the time of his death. One of his achievements was development of cost accounting with charts and graphs which Mr. William F. Luick proudly took him to introduce to members of the ice cream industry at meetings around the country. He was active in Milwaukee in 1863 as a member of the Deutschen Maenner Verein, a Catholic young men's society in whose roster were the names of most of the German Catholic families of Milwaukee. The social entertainment, concerts, balls, amateur theatricals and choruses of such societies were a fertile ground for romances.
.............Stephen H. Hirschboeck and Katherine J. Heiser were married May 26, 1896 by Rev. Wilmes in St. Mary's Church, Milwaukee. They lived in Gregg's duplex on Cramer Street just North of Bradford Avenue in St. Peter and Paul Parish. On Webster Place (then Summit Place), the North end of the same block, Charles Heiser built a duplex and Stephen and Katherine moved to the lower flat where their other children were born. On Kensington Boulevard between Farwell and Maryland Avenues in the North end of Shorewood it was built in 1925 and 1926. Their children were still with them. Herbert, a lawyer since 1921 was still single, Elizabeth was in Medical School and John in Marquette University High School.
.............Elizabeth finished Medical School and interned for a year at St. Francis Hospital in La Crosse. She left for Maryknoll September 28, 1928, received her habit as a Maryknoll Sister April 3, 1929 and was professed January 6, 1931. The story of her missionary service in Korea and in Bolivia and again in South Korea is told in Her Name is Mercy by Sister Maria Del Rey (Scribner 1957).
.............John, after graduation in Business Administration, entered the Marquette University School of Medicine. He received his M.D. degree in 1937 and had just begun practice of medicine when, in December, 1941, he entered service in the U.S. Navy for World War II including service in the Naval hospital on Guam. He later served as Dean of the School of Medicine.
.............Katherine Hirschboeck passed away in her home May 16, 1936. Stephen continued to live there, with John, until his death on September 27, 1941. The funeral took place at St. Robert's Church, which they had attended since building their home in Shorewood. Their last address was 2213 East Kensington Blvd. Stephen and Katherine Hirschboeck are buried in the Charles Heiser family plot at Calvary Cemetery, block 18, row 16. Their son John is buried with them along with Rosemary L. Hirschboeck (1916-1981). There are no other Hirschboeck's buried in that plot so the other children must be buried elsewhere.
