KELTING FAMILY ORIGINS
The Kelting family was Lutheran. They originated in Hamburg, Germany, but moved to the outskirts of the city of Elmshorn. The Kelting surname was also recorded as Kelbing or Kesting.
Hamburg had a population of 1,754,182 in 2006. In 1871, however, the population was just 339,000. In 1800, the population was around 95,000.
According to Thomas Crerar, a Kelting researcher in Germany, "In the area of the Holstein Elbmarschen lived a lot of Kelting branches. It is believed that the Kelting family came from the area of Friesland to the Holstein Elbmarschen and settled down in the village of Raa near Elmshorn. From there the family split in several branches. My Kelting ancestors lived in Raa and Holstendorf near Seestermuhe in the 16th and 17th century. Some of then were rich farm owners. Some sons of these farm owners became merchants in Hamburg."
Frisia is a coastal region along the southeastern corner of the North Sea, i.e. the German Bight. Frisia is the traditional homeland of the Frisians, a Germanic people who speak Frisian, a language group closely related to the English language. Frisia extends from the northwestern Netherlands across northwestern Germany to the border of Denmark.
The surname Kelting is probably from a field or place name in northern Germany. The surname Lent has several possible origins: 1) A habitational name from Lenthe near Hannover; 2) A short form of a Germanic personal name formed with land or "land" as the first element; or 3) from the Dutch van Lent, a habitational name from Lent in Elst, Gelderland -- a place where lime trees grew or from a lost place, Leent. The surname Schoof is both German and Dutch and comes from Middle Low German schof and the Middle Dutch scoof or "sheaf"; it's likely a metonymic occupational name for a sheaf-binder (someone who would bind grain together).
ELMSHORN, DENMARK (NOW GERMANY)
During the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648), the defeated troops of Wallenstein made their camp in Elmshorn (1627). The following year the town was of the plague ravaged and burned by marauding Croatian troops.
During the Swedish war, the late phase of the Thirty Years' War, a Swedish army marched through the town and devastated it in 1643. In 1657, during the First Northern War (1655-1660), Elmshorn was where Swedish troops under Charles X. Gustav battled with Danish troops.
On April 24, 1750, forty-seven houses and nine barns were destroyed in the Great Fire of Elmshorn. In the great flood of 1756, there were nearly 600 deaths. During the Napoleonic wars from 1813 to 1814, Elmshorn was occupied by a hostile army of Russians, Swedes and Prussians.
After this death and destruction, the town recovered through its vibrant whaling/maritime trade industry. Since 1945, Elmshorn fulfilled an important function as a rail and telecommunications hub.
In 1875, there were about 7,000 residents in Elmshorn, but it now boasts a population of nearly 50,000.
The city is located 32 km north of Hamburg at the small river Kruckau (near the Elbe) and is the sixth-largest city in the state of Schleswig-Holstein.
JOURNEY TO THE NEW WORLD
According to cousin Ervin Frank (1914-1999), "The Frank family left Prussia (Preuben) in large numbers and went to New York, Ohio, and Arkansas in the 1840s and 1850s." Clifford Neal Smith's book "Germans to America" lists the passengers of the ship Nordamerica (Nordamerika), a vessel based in Hamburg, departing Hamburg for New York on August 18, 1849, steerage compartment. Listed together are:
Theodor Frank (from Hamburg)
Anna Kelting (from Hamburg)
Great-great-great-grandmother Anna Kelting, born March 20, 1820, was baptized April 3, 1820 in the Second Pastorate of the Church of Elmshorn. The sponsors were Abellona Kruse at the mill (heitmuehle), Margaretha Witt in Elmshorn, and Maria Leiter at Wehdenkamp in Elmshorn.
Anna Kelting is listed in a compiled listing of emigrants from Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. She is listed as the daughter of Johann Hinrich Kelting and Magdalena Schoof/Schof.
Theodor Frank and Anna Kelting met on their ship on their voyage to the New World. Anna probably converted to Catholicism before the wedding, but the family kept both Lutheran and Catholic Bibles. Between 1850 and 1855, the family moved to Addison, Washington County, Wisconsin. The family is listed in the 1860 Census of Washington County, Wisconsin: Theodore, 44, farmer from Prussia; Anna, 41, born in Denmark; Joseph, 10, born in New York; Anna, 4, born in Wisconsin. The value of the family property was just $500; the value of the personal assets of the family was a meager $150.
Anna Kelting Frank died in 1901. I have a photo of her from the late 1800s.
ORIGINAL RECORDS FROM SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN
The Kelting family tree is above. I have also included some of the translated records, as follows.
Register of Baptisms Elmshorn-Kompastorat (Second Pastorate)
(--/1820) p. 699
* March 24th, 1820
~ April 3rd, 1820
Anna Kelting, legitimate daughter of the "Heuerling" Johan Hinrich Kelting uebern Stegen and Magdalena nee Schof. Godparents:
1. Abellona Kruse at the Heitmuehle
2. Margaretha Witt in Elmshorn
3. Maria Leiter at Wehdenkamp.
Comments: "Heuerling" -- the word "haeuern (hauern)" and "heuern" are the same as the English word "to hire." A "Haeuerling" (also: Heuerinste, Haeuerinste) farmed on land that he had leased from a farmer. It was usually land of minor quality that the farmer himself would not wish to cultivate. Quite often, the farmers would cancel the lease-contract after a few years, when the useful "hireling" had collected the stones from the field, had plowed manure into the ground, had removed shrubs and weeds. The "Haeuerling" usually worked his lease off as a day laborer for the landlord. He may have leased a cottage along with the land.
Uebern Stegen: a place in Elmshorn. Steg = a little bridge. There was a place called Vorm Stegen (this side of the bridge), and Uebern Stegen was the place on the other side of it.
Heitmuehle: a mill.
3. Maria Leiter auf d ... : hard to read. But Wehdenkamp makes sense, a place in Elmshorn. And there was a Maria Leiter in Elmshorn.
Register of Marriages Herzhorn
(7/1819) p. 499
married Oct. 3rd, 1819
The bachelor Hinrich Kelting, legitimate son of the late Hinrich Kelting in Hamburg and Catharina nee (?) and the spinster Magdalena Schoof, illegitimate daughter of Hinrich Schoof and Anna Koelln from Hainholz. The required testimonials of both were produced.
Register of Deaths Herzhorn
(17/1841) p. 546
died Sept. 13th, 1841
buried Sept. 17th, 1841
(Johann) Hinrich Kelting, "Haeuerling" behind the Herrenfeld, legitimate son of the peat-bargee (shipping peat from the peatbogs, used for heating, along the Elbe-River-estuary to Hamburg) Hinrich Kelting and Catharina Lent, in Hamburg, 45 years and 10 months old. He leaves five children by his wife Magdalena nee Schof:
1. Anna,
2. Hinrich,
3. Catharina,
4. Ida,
5. Magdalena.
SURNAME ORIGINS
The surname Kelting origins from the word "celt" or "celtic". There are several possible explanations for the family name: (1) From a field name or place in northern Germany; (2) The Celts were an Indo-European and ethno-linguistically diverse group of tribal societies in Iron Age and Roman-era Europe who spoke Celtic languages; (3) There are Rhineland charters in Latin which use such phrases as celtes seu fracmina lapidum to describe chips of stone used for making a road; or (4) It may have also been used to describe long, thin prehistoric stone or bronze adzes, chisels, hoes, or other axe-like tools.
The surname Lent has several possible origins and meanings: (1) Spring, from the German lenz and Dutch lente and derived from the Germanic root for long because in the spring the days visibly lengthen; or 2) a habitational name from Lent in Elst, Gelderland symbolizing a place where lime trees grew.
The surname Schoof is both German and Dutch and comes from Middle Low German schof and the Middle Dutch scoof or "sheaf"; it's likely a metonymic occupational name for a sheaf-binder (someone who would bind grain together).
