THREE BAVARIAN VILLAGES: LAM, HAIBUHL, SCHMELZ

The Lemberger family originates in Bayern, the former province of Bavaria, in southeast Germany -- near both Austria and the current Czech Republic. The family came from the neighboring villages of Schmelz, Lam, and Haibuhl.

Lam and Haibuhl are located about six kilometers apart. Haibuhl's name has been changed to Arrach. The villages are located in Oberpfalz (Upper Palatinate). The administrative region (Kreise) for Schmelz, Lam, and Haibuhl is Cham, which is located in the northern parts of the Bavarian forest. Immediately East of this region in Bavaria is the Czech Republic's Sudetenland region (Bohemia) and the towns of Plzen and Karlovy Vary.

Lam's current population is 2,875. The Lam market lies in the Bavarian forest in a narrow valley. The valley is bordered by the Arber, Osser, Kaitersberg, and the High Arc mountains. Lam was established May 29, 1279 in a deed of Bishop Henry of Regensburg.

Gary Grassl, an American who grew up in Haibuhl describes the village as "a little nest." The village is located among beautiful mountains, identified as the Bohemian Forest on maps but as the Bavarian Forest (Bayerischer Wald) by the natives. Mr. Grassl says that the the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia remind him of the village. Quoth Grassl: "Like the other kids, I ran barefoot until it snowed. We roamed the fields and forests looking for berries, mushrooms, fruits, nuts and anything edible. It all tasted infinitely better than from the supermarket today. In the winter, I sledded and skied down the hill from my house. In some ways, it was an idyllic childhood. Haibuhl had one through street covered with asphalt and two dirt streets that branched off north and south from the center of the village. We lived on the dirt street that led to the church and school, the most important buildings in the village. I suppose that there were about 50 houses altogether. The church with its slender steeple stood on the highest point of the village. It overlooked the valley of the Regen River. (There was only one church, and it was Catholic.) Two other villages belonged to our parish, Arrach and Ottenzell. Arrach had the railroad, the post office and two large factories, but we had the parish church. Everyone had to come to our village. On Saturday afternoon, the people swept the dirt road that led to the church."

Regarding Lam, Mr. Grassl says, "One kilometer to the east of Haibuehl was Lam. It was larger than our village, and could be described as a small town. I have two large oil paintings in my living room of Lam. One shows the little town with its onion church tower at the foot of the Osser and the other at the foot of the Arber, the highest mountain in the Bavarian Forest. Lam is in what is called the 'Lamer Winkel' or Lam corner because the valley of the Regen ends near Lam, and no train or major roads continue past Lam. Lam was the original parish, before Haibuhl. Most of my ancestors were married in the parish church of Lam."

He continues, "Schmelz was a very small place beyond Lam. I walked there once. We ate at a restaurant in Schmelz. My mother told me that we were related to the people who owned this restaurant. But I don't know any more than that. I suppose that we were related to many people in that area." He concluded, "The Lamer Winkel was a very poor agricultural area, because it is very rocky and mountainous. Today it has been turned into a tourist area and a natural park. It seems to be thriving as such."

LEMBERGER FAMILY IN BAVARIA

Georg Lemberger was born on April 26, 1818 as son of Peter Lemberger and his wife Barbara, daughter of Wolfgang Liebl, weaver. His godfather was Georg Manacher, citizen in Lam.

On February 5, 1849, George Lemberger, age 33, citizen and shepherd in Lam, married Katharina Stoeberl, age 36. At the time, Peter Lemberger, his father, was living with his wife Barbara Liebl Lemberger. The witnesses to the marriage were Georg Maier, headmaster, and Wolfgang Frisch, citizen of Lam.

Given that George was a shepherd, it seems the family was of modest means.

JOSEPH AND TECKLA LEMBERGER: PIONEERS

Emigrant ancestors Josef and Teckla (Vogl) Lemberger were pioneers on numerous fronts.

According to oral tradition, Thekla Vogl came from a family of wealth. Her parents were Josef Vogl and Anna Pritzl Vogl. Thekla was gifted at weaving and stitching. Oral tradition indicates that she knit layettes for royalty in Germany, and that she made the alter cloth for the church in Lam. These were tremendous honors for Thekla. This all occurred while Thekla was living in Lam as a single woman.

Tillie Stoiber, daughter of Katherine Lemberger, claimed that her grandmother (or one generation before, e.g., Anna Pritzl Vogl or Katherine Stoberl Lemberger) made trousseaus and layettes for nobility (including the then-Queen of Germany) as well as altar cloths for the Lam church.

Josef Lemberger was employed by Thekla's parents at their home. He came from a less privileged background, but they fell in love and he asked for her hand in marriage. Because his station was beneath her, the marriage was denied by Thekla's family members.

Even though the marriage was denied, she became pregnant. Josef and Thekla became the parents of Karl (1864), Mary (1866), and Josef (1868) before they were married, therefore the children were considered illegitimate. The marriage occurred in 1869. There are points of conjecture as to the reason for this delay. One consideration is the German military structure, in which lower-ranking soldiers were not permitted to marry. Another consideration is that Josef came from a less wealthy family and may have been considered "beneath" Thekla's standing.

Josef was a veteran of at least two German wars, suspected to be the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 (e.g., the Seven Weeks War or the German Civil War) and the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/1871. I explain more about his military service at A History of War. According to oral tradition, Josef's life was saved by a prayer book he had in his breast pocket when a bullet struck him in the chest.

LEMBERGER FAMILY COMES TO AMERICA

It is unclear why the family came to the United States. Two speculations include: 1) The pressure from having illegitimate children, which was not common or accepted by the church, caused the family to relocate; or 2) Josef Lemberger, who had been drafted and served in the military, was concerned that his sons would also be drafted. To avoid this inevitability, the family packed for the United States.

Oral tradition indicates that Charles (Karl) Lemberger came to the U.S. in 1882 and stayed with relatives, the Frank Meindl family. His father, Josef, may have been lonesome for his oldest son and followed him to Milwaukee in 1883, leaving his family behind for economic reasons. Josef traveled from Bremen to New York on the ship Neckar and arrived on October 20, 1883. His age was 38 and his occupation was listed as a laborer. He traveled alone. Teckla and the children stayed behind. Katherine Lemberger, who had already married Engelbert Stoiber, was next to come to Milwaukee, in September, 1883.

Josef and his son Charles saved their money and in 1884 sent for the rest of the family. The bulk of the Lemberger clan came with mother Teckla in 1884. All family members settled in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The ship listing for the Lemberger immigrations are as as follows: Jos. 38/M laborer USA
(ship: Neckar, Bremen to NY, arrived Oct. 20, 1883)

Thekla 44/F widow
Maria 10/F
Josef 9/M
Caroline 5/F
Martha 4/F
Josephine 3/F
Ferdinand 1/M
(ship: Werra/Nurnberg, Bremen to NY, arrived May 27, 1885)

This information was compiled from Germans to America.

LEMBERGER CHILDREN

During alcohol prohibition, Charles Lemberger had a beer farm in Menomonee Falls. He was frequently arrested for making and selling his Lemberger home brew. All of the Lemberger men were mild-mannered, good-looking, and gentle -- with the exception of son Josef (m: Theresa Schraufnagel). Known as Joe the baker, "he could swear like billy heck." His bakery was attached to his home and his son Ferdinand delivered the bakery to stores and homes. He made the best rye bread and butter horns (with coarse salt).

My ancestor Josephine Lemberger Hirschboeck was quite connected to the family, as her mother lived with Josephine and several of Josephine's siblings lived nearby.

In her later years, Teckla Vogl Lemberger lived in the basement of Josephine's home in Milwaukee. Teckla took in laundry, washed it, ironed it, picked it up, and delivered it using a baby buggy. Her diet consisted of rye bread and beer. When it was grandma Teckla's birthday, her many grandchildren were allowed to stay home from school (St. Michael's in Milwaukee) to celebrate.

Josef Lemberger became a naturalized U.S. citizen on January 16, 1906. His naturalization was witnessed by C.H. Menz and George Fries. (Milwaukee County Records, petition 9935, volume 16, page 252). He died Oct. 2, 1907 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and was buried at Calvary Cemetery, block 14, row 328. Teckla Vogl Lemberger died at 701 30th Street in Milwaukee. This location is just south and west of the Mitchell Park Domes on the east side, near Mitchell Park. It is still a residential neighborhood. Thekla Lemberger was buried at Calvary Cemetery in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, block 14, row 328.

SURNAME LEMBERGER

The surname Lemberger is a place name, likely originating from the village of Lamberg, which is just up the road from the towns where the family is documented as living. Lamberg's zip code is 93453 and its in Neukirchen beim Heiligen Blut, Cham, Bavaria. There is also a Lambach, which is even tinier than Lamberg, and seems to only have a hotel where tourists stay in the mountains. Lambach is closer to Lam than Lamberg and is immediately east of Schmelz.
