Notes on Calel Mahl:
............."It happened here in the town of Zamosc on the 25th day of June, 1846 at 4:00pm. Appeared the Orthodox Jew Moyzesz Wahl, Assistant Rabbi of the town of Zamosc, together with the Orthodox Jew Calel Mahl, bachelor-shopkeeper, living in the town of Zamosc, age 28, born in the district of Lagmiey(?), Galicia, Austria, [son] of the married couple Zysman and Ruchli Mahl, both already deceased -- and Etla Goldbaum, maiden, age 23, of Zamosc, residing with family, daughter of the married couple Icek and Chaj Goldbaum, both already deceased. Witnesses: Szaja Szatzkamer, money lender, age 74 and Boruch Harfen, synagogue attendant, age 54, residing in the town of Zamosc, declared that today Calel Mahl and Etla Goldbaum were married in a religious ceremony. Three banns were read on the 6th, 13th, and 20th of June of the current year, in the synagogue of Zamosc. This document was read to all and signed by the Assistant Rabbi Moyzesz Wahl, Calel Mahl, Szaja Szatzkamer and Boruch Harfen. Etla Goldbaum did not know how to write."

FAMILY ORIGINS
The Mahl family lived in Zamosc, Poland. The family was Jewish and Orthodox.
Zysman Mahl is the first recorded ancestor. The name Zisman is Yiddish and derives from Sussman, which means "sweet man".
The family originated in Austrian Galicia, which now consists largely of southern Poland and the Ukraine. The town of origin is listed in a marriage document, and my best translation of the village is Lednica, Galicia.
The family migrated from their place of origin to Zamosc between 1819 and 1824.
LEDNICA, AUSTRIAN GALICIA
Lednica Gorna is a village in the administrative district of Wieliczka, within Wieliczka County, Lesser Poland Voivodeship, in southern Poland. It lies approximately 3 km. south-east of Wieliczka and 15 km. south-east of the regional capital Krakow. The current population is around 1,300 inhabitants. A history of the village is available online. An old map of Austrian Galicia shows Lednica on the map at C3. The old part of the village is called Mierzączka.
SURNAME ORIGINS
The name has German origins. It's either 1) a topographic name for someone who lived at a mill, or 2) a metonymic occupational name for a miller or mill worker. There is another Jewish family called the Majl family that lived in the same vicinity.
