Notes on Josef and Teckla Lemberger:
.............Either Teckla, her mother Anna Pritzl, or her mother-in-law Katharina Stoberl Lemberger knit layettes for the Queen of Germany. In her later years, Teckla Lemberger lived in the basement of her daughter Josephine's home in Milwaukee. Using a baby buggy, she took in laundry, washed it, ironed it, and delivered it. Her diet consisted of rye bread and beer.

* Anna Peischl is the daughter of Wolfgang Peischl and his wife Barbara. Both were alive in 1764 when their daughter Anna was married. In 1792 the first name of Anna's father is listed as Mathias Peischl rather than Wolfgang Peischl. The surname was also spelled Peischel, Poeschl, Poeschel, Poschl or Poschel.

** Anna Maria Pirzl, daughter of Andreas Pirzl a fisherman from Lam and his wife Anna Maria Sperl, daughter of Johann Georg Sperl, a tailor. Andreas Pirzl was deceased before 1792.

FAMILY ORIGINS

The Pritzl family was Roman Catholic. The first Johannes Pritzl was a weaver by trade. He was also a sexton -- a person who looked after the church and churchyard, including bell-ringing and gravedigging.

The godparents of the three children of Johannes Pritzl and his wife Anna Maria (unknown) included Johannes Michael Sperl, tailor from Schmelz, his wife Anna Maria Sperl, and Johannes Michael Sperl again.

The second Johannes Pritzl was also a weaver.

The godparents of the four children of this Joannes Pritzl and his wife Anna Maria Pirzl were: Anna Maria Dax, Wolfgang Dax, Anna Klingseifen (wife of the blacksmith), and Anna Liebl.

The third Johannes Pritzl (married to Anna Maria Pirzl) was also a weaver.

FAMILY HISTORY

According to cousin Bob Pritzl, who researched the family in-depth, the Pritzl's (also spelled Pretzl, according to Bob) have been in area along the German/Czech border since at least the 1500s and had roots in Chudiwa (Chudenin), Flecken (Fleky), Fuchsberg (Lisu), Huehof (Sruby), Maxberg (Maxof), Neuern (Nyrsko), Neumark (Vseruby), Ploss (Plane), Rothenbaum (Cervene Drevo), Traxlmoos, (Slatiny) and Hirschau (Hyrsov).

FAMILY ORAL TRADITION

According to Ulrich Pritzl in Germany, there is a story from his grandfather indicating that after Michael Pritzl was married in 1886, his family temporarily lived to Silbersbach near Lam, at "Vogl Moni" and then "Koller Hansl and Vogl." Therefore the Vogls were likely cousins to the Pritzls.

Josef Vogl and his family were wealthy. It is believed his daughter Thekla was banned from marrying Josef Lemberger because he was not in the same class as the Vogls. She did it anyway.

LIFE IN BAVARIA

The Pritzl family resided in Lam, Germany. Lam is located in Oberpfalz (Upper Palatinate). The administrative region (kreis) is Cham, which is located in the northern parts of the Bavarian forest.

Immediately East of this region in Bavaria is the Czech Republic's Sudetenland region (Bohemia) and the towns of Plzen and Karlovy Vary. Lam's current population is 2,875. The Lam market lies in the Bavarian forest in a narrow valley. The valley is bordered by the Arber, Osser, Kaitersberg, and High arc mountains. Lam was established May 29, 1279 in a deed of Bishop Henry of Regensburg.

SURNAME ORIGINS

The surname Pritzl is derived from a pet form of Pritz, a topographic name of Slavic origin for someone living near a birch wood (brjaza).

The surname Poeschl (Peischl) originates in Bavaria from a pet form of the personal name Peter.

It is unclear what the surname Pirzl means or from where it derives. The surname Sperl comes from the Middle High German spar, meaning "sparrow".
