FAMILY ORIGINS

The Reichl/Reichel family originated in Burgheim in the province of Bayern/Bavaria. Burgheim is a small market village in the province Neuburg-Schrobenhausen near Swabia. It borders Ingolstadt to the north and east and Augsburg to the south and west. The town is surrounded by Ortlfing and Strab to the east, Moos and Schnodhof to the north and Staudheim to the west. The parish books are available in the Diocesan Archive Augsburg.

The Reichl family lived in the house of Nagelschmied, house number 175 in town. There were other Reichl families at house number 46, blacksmith, and house number 68, shoemaker. All of my Reichl family males for many generations were in the blacksmith profession, thus the Nagelschmied house designation.

The family was Roman Catholic. Two of my family lines trace back to Cosmas Reichl and his wife Victoria Pez (Bez or Betz). I am descended from both of their children, Joseph Reichl (m: Maria Anna Schwinger) and Maria Anna Reichl (m: Damion Hirschbock).

Cosmas Reichl, son of Georg Reichl and Barbara (unknown), was born Dec. 5, 1734 in Burgheim (p. 52, roll 1). George Reichl was a blacksmith in town. On Oct. 20, 1761, Cosmas Reichl married Victoria Betz/Pez/Bez, daughter of Joseph Betz, potter, and his wife Hilaria. It is unclear if the Betz family was from Burgheim or not. At the wedding of Cosmas and Victoria, a witness is listed as Joseph Betz, potter from Wellheim. This could not have been her father Joseph Betz, potter, because he and his wife Maria Hilaria were deceased at the time of the wedding in 1761.

Wellheim is a small village to the north and to the east of Burgheim. To get from Wellheim to Burgheim, one would have to go through Gammersfeld, Ellenbrunn, Mauern, Rennertshofen, and Bertoldsheim. Wellheim is surrounded by Hutting and Gammersfeld to the south, Hard and Biesenhard to the east, and Konstein and Aicha to the north. Wellheim is the home of the Naturpark Altmahltal and covers an area of 3,000 sq. km. -- one of the largest nature parks in Germany. The city is located in the district Eichstatt. It lies in the so called "Urdonautal," a valley where the Danube runs to the Black Sea. Today a little river, the Schutter, flows through the village in the opposite direction (north-south vs. south-north). There is no industry in the town, but beautiful landscape and pure nature.

Cosmas' and Victoria's son Joseph was born March 17, 1764. His godparents were Joseph Antonius Ritter, farmer, and his wife Catharina. Their daughter, Maria Anna, was born March 26, 1770.

JOSEPH REICHL FAMILY

Joseph Reichl and his wife Maria Anna Schwinger lived in Burgheim, house number 175.

Maria Anna Schwinger was the daughter of Johann Schwinger, weaver in Burgheim, and his wife Catharina, both deceased by the time of the marriage. Her godparents were Jacob Rueff, shoemaker, and his wife Maria Anna (roll 2, page 60). The witnesses of the Reichl-Schwinger wedding, which occurred on May 8, 1797 in Burgheim, included Joseph Humplmayr, saddler, and Antonius Degmayr, farmer (p. 27, roll 2).

At the time of their son's birth they were not married, and therefore the birth of Andreas on Nov. 30, 1795 was considered illegitimate. It was then legitimized by the marriage of the parents on May 8, 1797. Andreas Reichl grew up to be become a blacksmith-master. He married Margaretha Eisenbarth in 1817.

Andreas was was twice married. He resided in house number 175 and passed away at 7am on February 4, 1860 at age 65 of senile decay. He was buried February 6. His first wife, Margaretha Eisenbarth, hailed from a village an hour away from Burgheim called Herblingen (in the Fremdingen territory) in the province Donau-Ries. The village of Herblingen is tiny, consisting of just a few roads. The closest villages are Hochaltingen to the north and Utzwingen to the south. The village is a bit west of the center point between Nurnberg and Augsburg.

Margaretha Eisenbarth was born in 1798 and died June 23, 1839 at 11pm of congestive heart failure. She was buried June 25, 1839. Her parents were Caspar Eisenbarth and Barbara Zinkh. Caspar Eisenbarth was a farmer.

MARIA ANNA REICHL FAMILY

Maria Anna Reichl, sister of Joseph, was born in 1770. Her godparents were Joseph and Catharina Ritter.

Maria Anna transmitted a dowry to Damion Hirschbock, a shoemaker and messenger in the town of Burgheim, on February 4, 1801 in Burgheim. The only recorded child of Damion and Maria Anna is Sebastian Hirschbock, the immigrant ancestor, who was born in 1807 in Burgheim.

Details on the Hirschboeck emigration to the U.S. can be found here.

EMIGRATION TO THE NEW WORLD

Andreas Reichl and his wife Margaretha (descendants of Joseph Reichl) had many children. The youngest is my great-great-great-grandmother, Otillia Reichl, who came to the U.S. alone via New York harbor three years after her brother Johan Reichl had arrived. She arrived in New York on June 15, 1857 at the age of 22, on the ship Attrena from Bremen (source: Line: 26, Microfilm Serial: M237, Microfilm Roll: M237_175, List Number: 677). According to Ken Grolle, whose family also sailed on the ship, the actual name of the ship was Athena, not Attrena. The captain of the ship was Dietrich Schilling.

Otillia's eldest brother, Johan (John) Reichl first came to the New World on the ship Alfred in May 1854. This was one year after the Hirschboeck family came to America. Johan Reichl traveled alone and settled in Michigan. The reasons for the emigration of the Reichel brother and sister are not known. Eventually, John Reichl moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

CENSUS DATA IN WISCONSIN

In the 1866 and 1867 City Directory for Milwaukee, John Reichel is listed as a shoemaker living at 608 Cherry Street, Milwaukee. He is not in the 1865 or 1863 City Directories. Between 1863, when his daughter Elizabeth was born in Michigan, and 1866, when John Reichl is listed as living in Milwaukee, he moved his family from Michigan to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The 1870 Milwaukee City Directory lists John Reichl as residing at 456 16th Street with his occupation being a laborer.

The 1870 U.S. Census lists John, 59; Anna, 49; Elizabeth, 17; Mary, 13; Caspar, 11; Appolonia, 9; Catharina, 7; and John, 5. Mary is listed as sewing in a dress making store, while her father is listed as a retail grocer. The 1880 Milwaukee City Directory lists John Reichel as a confectioner living at 1124 Cherry Street. The 1890 listing is the same as the 1880 listing. In the 1900 U.S. Census, the widowed Elizabeth Hoelz is listed as living with her son, George, 9, and her father, John Reichl, 79, and her nephew, John Reichl, 24. Also living with the family is Mary Veits, 17, a servant from Germany. The family was living in Milwaukee's ninth ward, a common area for German emigrants.

In the 1900 U.S. Census, there is an Ottilie living in Milwaukee who was born in Bavaria in December 1834 and "came to America in 1857." She was a widow (her husband, George Hirschboeck died on December 6, 1880) and, in 1900, she was living with her son Damian (born in July 1860 in Wisconsin) and her daughter Barbara Hirschboeck (born in September 1858).

The 1930 Milwaukee City Directory lists John Reichl as a packer living at Cherry Street in Milwaukee. This latter listing is definitely the son of John Reichl (b: 1821). According to the 1900 census, ancestor Tillie Reichel Hirschboeck's brother is listed as follows: John Reichel, father, born April 1821, widower, b. Germany, to U.S. 1854 (naturalized citizen); living in Milwaukee, Wisconsin with daughter Elizabeth Hoelz (born in Michigan in May 1863), her son George (born January 1882 in Wisconsin) and Elizabeth's brother John, Jr. (born in Wisconsin in April 1876).

SURNAME MEANINGS

The surname Reichel is derived from a pet form of any of several Germanic personal names formed with the Germanic element ric or 'power'. The surnames Hirschboeck and Eisenbarth are affiliated with the Reichel family. The surname Eisenbarth originates in South Germany and is from a Germanic personal name composed of Old High German isan, meaning 'iron' plus berht, meaning 'bright' or 'shining'. By folk etymology, the second element has been confused with Bart, meaning 'beard' (formerly spelled Barth). Hirschbock was an ancient Bavarian name that meant "deerbuck" or "stag deer."
