FAMILY ORIGINS
The Scheven family originated in Hochkirchen, just south of Dorweiler/Norvenich.
The Hochkirchen parish, where Barbara Scheven married Joannes Kayser in 1748, is located on the east bank of the Neffelbach (a tributary of the Erft River). The church stands on a Roman villa destroyed by fire in the Fifth Century. The church was originally built out of wood in the Ninth Century. In the Sixteenth Century the church received its present appearance. The population of the village in 1794 was just 155 and grew to 340 by 1885.
The first mention of Hochkirchen was in 1075. The village name changed throughout history. Other names included Hoenchirche, Hoinkirchin, Hoynkyrchin, Hoynkirgen, Hoynkyrchen, Hoynkirken, Hoekirchen, Hoenkirgen, Hokirchen, Hoynkirchen, Hunkyrchen, Hoenkyrchen, Hoenkerchen, Hoenkirchen, and Honkirchen The masonry is suffused with Roman building materials and the uniformly designed interior was created around 1800 and was restored in the 1950s. The neo-classical style features a gold leaf decoration. The gothic ceiling has been restored and painted.
In 1969 Hochkirchen incorporated to Norvenich. Present-day Hochkirchen includes the Romanesque Catholic parish church of St. Victors, a cemetery, a sports ground with club house, a shooting range, and two mom-and-pop shops with a bakery. Both the local restaurant and the local elementary school closed in 2009. The current population is 401 persons.
SURNAME ORIGINS
The surname Scheven was also spelled Schevens, Scheben, Schebens, Schaeven, and Schaefen. A bit west of the city of Duren is a place called Schevenhuttener Strabe. This may be where the family name Schevens came from. The name may also have Dutch origins. Alternatively, it could be an occupational name for a shepard from shaf, or 'sheep'.
The surname Putz is a topographic name for someone who lived by a well, from the latin puteus.
The surname Schweins is an occupational name for a swineherd, from the Middle High German swin or "hog".
The surname Lipp originates from a German pet form of the personal name Philipp/Philip.
