FAMILY ORIGINS

The Stoberl family originated in Lam, Bayern, Germany, located in Oberpfalz (Upper Palatinate). The family was Roman Catholic.

The administrative region (kreis) is Cham, which is located in the northern parts of the Bavarian forest. Immediately east of the region in Bavaria is the Czech Republic's Sudetenland region (Bohemia) and the towns of Plzen and Karlovy Vary.

Lam's current population is 2,875. The Lam market lies in the Bavarian forest in a narrow valley. The valley is bordered by the Arber, Osser, Kaitersberg, and the High Arc mountains. Lam was established May 29, 1279 in a deed of Bishop Henry of Regensburg.

SURNAME ORIGINS

Stoberl has several possible meanings: 1) A nickname from Slavic stobor or "fighter", 2) From the Middle High German stouber or "hunting dog", a metonymic occupational name for someone who bred or cared for hunting dogs or a nickname for someone who resembled one, or 3) A variant of Stoever, which comes from the middle German (bad)stover, a nickname for a bather or worker at a public bathhouse. There is also a family from the region called "Stoiber" that may be related to the Stoberls.

The surname Aschenbrenner is an occupational name for someone who prepared ash from wood fires for use in glassworks and soapworks, from the Middle High German asche ("ashes") + brenner ("burner").

The surname Hamann is from a reduced form of the personal name Johannes (John) + mann or man, i.e. "John's man" (servant).
