FAMILY ORIGINS

The Hüniger / Hoeningen family resided in Nemmenich and Geich, two communities that are part of present-day Zülpich in the Nordrhein-Westphalen province of West Germany.

Zülpich is a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany between Aachen and B önn. It belongs to the district Euskirchen. The population of Zulpich is 20,000.

Nemmenich has a population of 678. It is 9 minutes south and east of Zülpich. The population in 1767 was just 180 inhabitants.

Geich is one of 24 towns that make up Zulpich in the Euskirchen district. It's situated near the Neffelsee Nature Reserve Lake, a popular tourist attraction. The village has a population of 815. Geich is about 15 minutes south of Nörvenich.

SURNAME ORIGINS

The surname Hunigers was also spelled Honnigen, Hoeningen, Hunigars, Huenigars, Huenigers, Huniger, Huningen, Hunigen, and Hueningen. The surname Hoenig is a pet form of the personal name Heinrich. The name Honingen may be a place name from the village of Honningen, a municipality in the district of Ahrweiler. The location has a population of about 1,100 and is about 45 minutes southeast from Geich. It is unclear what the surname Hunigers derives from or means.

The surname Engel could have a variety of meanings: (1) From a German personal name like Engelbert or Engelhard; (2) From Ing, the name of a Germanic god or folk hero; (3) From living at a house bearing the sign of an angel; or (4) From Angle, a Germanic tribe living on the Jutland peninsula. In the 5th-6th centuries, the Angles invaded eastern and northern Britain and gave their name to England.

FAMILY ORIGINS

The Hagenlaeger / Hagenleger family resided in Nordrhein-Westphalen, Germany in the city of Zulpich. The family was Roman Catholic.

ZÜLPICH AND NEMMENICH

Zülpich is a city in the Euskirchen district with about 20,000 inhabitants, spread over the central city and 24 towns. It is about 20 minutes south of Nörvenich. In 1798, after the Rhineland fell to France, it became the French political or administrative subdivision of the region. The Church of St. Peter, first built in 848, was rebuilt several times until it was destroyed in World War II.

Nemmenich is among the communities of Zülpich, located directly east of the city. It has 678 inhabitants. The village lies in the lowlands of the the Rotbach (Erfst) River. The 1767 population of the village was 180.

SURNAME ORIGINS

The surname Hagenlaeger could have a variety of meanings. It seems likely that it is an occupational name for a hedgelayer. It could also derive from the German hag, which means "protected place" + laeger or "physician" = protected or valuable healer.

It is unclear what the surname Proen means or from where it derives. There is a town called Prum in Westeifel (Rhineland-Palatinate), Germany. There were two large Prum families living in Niederberg (Erfstadt), about 15 minutes away from Eggersheim. Joanni Pruem and his wife Gutilae and Christiano Pruem and his wife Apolloniae were both having children during the period of 1670-1690. It is possible that one of these are the parents of Anna Sophia Proen.
